Ительменская одежда шилась из тюленьих и оленьих шкур таким образом, что ее можно было выворачивать на обе стороны. Лицевая сторона одежды обычно окрашивалась в ярко-желтый цвет с помощью ольховой коры. Подол, расцвеченный белым оленьим волосом и красными полосками кожи, обшивался мехом: до прихода русских – каланьим, а после – собачьим. Шитьем одежды и обуви занимались исключительно женщины, которые раньше делали себе иголки из собольих костей, а нитки сучили из крапивы или оленьего волоса. На верхнее платье, кухлянку, ительмены нашивали до сотни кистей из тюленьего волоса, окрашенного в красный цвет, которые болтаются из стороны в сторону при каждом движении.
Winter clothes
The winter clothes of the Itelmens, both for men and women, were closed fur coats with a hood - kuhlyankas (below the knees) and kamleys (up to the toes). They were sewn from reindeer fur in double ways - fur in and out. In winter, men and women wore trousers with fur inside, in summer - suede.
Summer clothes
Летней одеждой часто служила выношенная зимняя, до контактов с русским населением понятия “летняя одежда” у ительменов не было. На промыслах она иногда дополнялась плащами и обувью из рыбьих кож. Женская домашняя одежда – комбинезон, мужская – набедренная кожаная повязка.
Footwear
Winter shoes were sewn from reindeer and bear legs’ skin, supplemented with fur stockings, summer ones - from pinniped skin.
Headdress
Winter fur hats in the form of bonnets were close to those of Yakut, summer ones made of birch bark or feathers and sticks were similar to Aleutian ones. The headpiece is made of a wide leather band decorated with an ornament. In the lower part of the headdress stripe there is a red zigzag stripe up to 1 cm wide. Vertical red zigzag stripes are directed to it from above, bordered on both sides by narrow black zigzag stripes. The same zigzag black stripe is located above the horizontal red zigzag stripe, interrupted at the places where the vertical stripes are directed. Between the vertical stripes there are two white stripes, separated by a narrow gray stripe formed by the background of the headband and a stripe of hare fur at the top and bottom. Along the bottom, it is decorated with sable tails, brown skin fringe, bead pendants and long fur tassels. In general, the headdress looks elegant, festive thanks to the appliqué ornamentation and the edging of white fur, pendants and tails.
