Ethnogenesis of the Alutorians

Information about the Alutorians can be found in the earliest accounts of Kamchatka. In 1697 they were taxed by Russian Cossacks and for a number of years provided armed resistance to the Russians. After the suppression of the rebellion of 1751 their number decreased. They were subjected to raids by the Chukchi, who took away their herds of reindeer. At the end of the 18th century the Alutorians were an isolated, closed group, which made them less affected by smallpox epidemics than other Koryaks. The same isolation allowed them to preserve their traditional economy and life style better.

In Russia, according to the All-Russian Census 2002, the Alutorians were not singled out separately and were mostly included in the Koryaks, among whom 3 people self-identified as “Alutorians”, another 3 as “Alutalu”, and 6 as “Olyutorians”, i.e. a total of 12 Alutorians. The All-Russian Census 2010 does not mention the Alutorians even as a sub-ethnic group.
