The self-name is tadar-kizhi, currently almost everyone calls themselves Shors. Other ethnonyms used in relation to the Shors are the Kuznetsk Tatars, the Kondom and Mrass Tatars, and the Abintsy. The number in Russia is 14 thousand people. In 2000, by a Government decree, they were granted the status of an indigenous small-numbered people.
The main settlement area is located in the south of the Kemerovo region - the basin of the upper reaches of the Tom River and its tributaries Kondoma and Mrassu — Tashtagolsky, Novokuznetsk and Mezhdurechensky districts, the cities of Myski, Mezhdurechensk, Tashtagol, Novokuznetsk, Kemerovo. They also live in Khakassia (Askizsky district, city of Abakan, Tashtypsky district).
