Veps

   They call yourself - veps(a), vepsad. An indigenous people living in the north-west of Russia. Veps belong to the Eastern Baltic anthropological type with some signs of the White Sea component, which is typical for most Baltic-Finnish peoples. According to the 2010 census – 5936 people. Traditionally they live on the territory of Karelia, Vologda and Leningrad regions of Russia. Since 2006, they have been included in the List of Indigenous Peoples of the North, Siberia and the Far East of the Russian Federation.

An ethnonym vepsa are known in karelian, finnish and estonian languages. There are a number of assumptions about its origin, including from the name of the fin of the fish vepsi, vievse, viepse, viesve. Some researchers suggest, that the one of the groups ves' is mentioned in the "Tale of Bygone Years" as tchudes. For the first time tchudes (Thiudos, Tuidos, Thiudi) is mentioned by the Gothic historian Jordan (VI century), it has been preserved in modern colloquial Russian in relation to Veps, Vodi, Estonians, Ingermanland Finns.
