The Evenk fairy tale "Khilri Asi"

   During the expedition work in Srednekolymsk, a meeting was held with Ulyana Ivanovna Khabarovskaya (Balaganchik), a veteran of labor, born on May 15, 1954 (70 years old), a native speaker of the Even language and bearer of Even culture, born in the Berezovsky national (nomadic) nasleg (a settlement). During the conversation, unique information about Even folklore was received from the informant, which was orally passed down from generation to generation.

   The tales told by the informant can be characterized as non-fairy tale prose or fairy tales without songs inserts, and one of them is "Hilri asi" (A Lonely Woman).

   Эрэк нимкам укчэнрин атаву. Өмэн аси бэиӈи көкэчэлэн дёр хутнюми эмэптин. Хелрэр биситэн. Дигын тэкэн учикандалтан биситын, дыгэн учакатан бисын, дючанти да набди эйду набданча. Тачин бидэнритын, куӈал дебдэвур гасчи гасчиватта. Энинтикивур өмнэкэн гөн:

A Lonely Woman

   This is a fairy tale about a woman. About one woman who lived a very hard life, a lonely woman, a hard life, a poor woman.

   A difficult life situation and she had two little sons. And she, there was nothing to eat at home, told her children to stay home. I'm going to go squirrel hunting now and I'll be back. And she said that she gave her son an order to look after this fire. In the evening, until the evening they waited and waited, the baby, the youngest child fell asleep, he put him to sleep and waited himself and tossed him a little and kept looking at the door to see if his mother would come or not. And he dozed off a little and when he opened his eyes, he looks and sees near the fire. The fire is burning brightly. He opens his eyes, and there by the fire sits a very beautiful girl. Very beautiful.

   She is dressed in traditional national clothes, all in beads - khereché and her hair is so beautiful, very much so and the boy looked at her all the time, she was cooking something. And then she asked. Although she did not turn to face the boy, she smiled a little and said, began to ask:

   - Where is your mother?

   The boy answered that my mother had gone hunting and we were waiting for her. And then she gave it to him and said, here are your mother's two squirrel stomachs, she gave me some squirrel stomachs for you to give them to. I am cooking meat for you now. They smelled the smell of cooked meat, they were hungry. And he woke up his brother, they began to eat meat and when they had eaten their fill they wanted to sleep. And they went to bed.

   In the morning, when they woke up, the fire had cooled down, the girl was gone, the mother was gone and this girl was gone. The mother did not come, she looked over which the fire from the fire had already cooled down, there was a cauldron hanging there and cooked meat was visible on the cauldron.

   The older boy was very smart, a smart boy, he thought very well and he immediately suspected something and said to his younger brother: "Go straight along this road, don't turn off there, you'll see, walk quickly, you'll see a big tree there, stand near this tree and wait for me. I'll catch our deer Budindya now and saddle him and come, I'll ride up to you."

   The younger one ran quickly there to the tree, the older one caught the deer, sat on the deer, galloped up to the younger one near the tree, put him behind himself, jumped on the deer himself and they raced. They raced to nowhere. And the younger one didn't even ask what was going on, he followed the instructions: "Hold on tight, don't let go, or you'll fall." And on the way, when they were riding on a deer, they saw one pair of their mother's fur boots and they took them, then after some time the second pair of fur boots, then a coat, a hat, mittens, he collected everything. He collected everything and put everything in one place. He understood everything and the younger one didn't ask anything.

   The older one understood everything. And what was the matter, he sat on the deer and then hit the deer harder so that it would run faster.

   The deer ran very quickly, they galloped, galloped far, far from this area.

   Why. They ran, here, at the same time as if there was snow, at this time (he specifies what time it was) autumn, only snow fell, as at this time. And there were no tracks, nothing. The deer was very smart too and knew where to go, the deer was leading, in fact, they were just riding on it.

   It turned out that this was arisag - Satan, how to say in the form of a girl and she fed them with the meat of their mother and the boy was not in vain it was said that he was very smart, he understood what was going on and it was necessary to leave this area without taking anything from it, they even collected and put their mother's things and so they left. And so they left. If so, then the ending is good.

   Why is it said in the fairy tale that the deer was smart, there was no path and he walked by himself, the deer always goes to the smell of people, to the smoke. He led them there. That's all.
