Historically, the culture of the Itelmens, in comparison with the neighboring Paleo-Asian peoples, has a few features. With the general characteristics of the Itelmen economy as a complex commercial one, their belonging to the economic and cultural type of the settled fishermen of Siberia is indisputable.

Рыба служила основной пищей и кормом для собак. Ее заготавливали впрок: вялили и квасили в ямах, реже запекали и коптили, зимой замораживали. Лососевую икру сушили и квасили. Реже употребляли в пищу мясо зверей и птиц.
Основным средством передвижения ительменов были нарты оригинальной конструкции, запряжённые оленями или собаками. Нарты украшались резным орнаментом. Для передвижения по воде использовались лодки.
The settlements of the Itelmens, often fortified in the past, were located along the banks of water bodies and consisted of several winter and summer dwellings. The Itelmens united and lived according to the principle of not only kinship, but also common fishing grounds.
